What to Expect in High School

By Megan Cynaumon

Dear Avery,

High school is such a pivotal and crazy time of life. You’ll experience the highs of young love, and the lows of fights with friends. You’ll be pressured by friends, family and yourself in all different ways. Man, do you have a FUN and WILD ride ahead of you, kid!

Here are a list of things to expect:

1. Your first love will always be your first love. Choose him wisely. I did and he was amazing.

2. Freshman year is critical. This is the time where circles of friends start to form. Talk to everyone. Be nice to everyone.

3. Join clubs to explore new things and meet people you wouldn’t have met otherwise. I wish I had.

4. Your BFF will change, at least 3 times.

5. You will pass a MILLION notes in class. Keep those. Years later they will make you laugh — very hard.

6. When you see kids at a party hanging out in the bathroom… walk away. Don’t go find out what they are doing. Trust me.

7. Keep a journal. Write about what you learned that day, whether in the classroom or around the lunch court. Write about the butterflies that boy will give you.

8. Play a sport or join an after school program. This is what high school is ALL about. Being involved and exploring what you are good at (or maybe what you aren’t good at!)Image

9. Take at least 2 hard classes a semester. Surround yourself with smarter people. If you are the smartest person in the class, ask for a new class. Challenge yourself. I took pre-calculus my junior year. I failed. My only F I’ve ever received. My teacher said I should probably drop the class. I told her, “I’m not going anywhere. I want to pass this class.” The experience of being surrounded by some of the smartest kids in class is far richer than a letter grade.

10. Don’t pass up opportunities to go to dances because they aren’t “cool”…they are cool…and they are fun! You’ll regret not going if you don’t.

11. Don’t make fun of the cheerleaders. I made fun of them once…and then became one. They work hard for not much respect.

12. School is important. Grades are important. Study hard, but don’t over do it. The kids with the above 3.0 average and social life (me!) got it right. 😉

13. Boys will come and go. You will break hearts, and your heart will break. Soak that up. The roller coaster of emotions that will bring are passionate and exciting.

14. Mean girls suck. Don’t be one.

15. Take creative writing…it was the best class I ever took. (Shout out to Miss Angelone!)

16. Don’t wear mid-drift tops. Even if they are “in”. No one looked good in them << I sure as heck didn’t look good. Rookie mistake.

17. Too much make-up is unattractive. You will experiment a million times to find the right amount.

18. Rumors suck. Don’t give them a reason to start a rumor about you.

19. Teachers are wonderful. Get to know them personally. Visit them during lunch or breaks.

20. Enjoy yourself. The best is yet to come!

With love,

  1. 21. Take SO MANY PICTURES! You are not fat. Nobody else can see that _____ (zit/weird thing your hair is doing/your shoes don’t go). You look fine. You are beautiful and so you right now and will see that and fully appreciate it later–and then you will wish you’d taken SO MANY MORE PHOTOS. Seriously.

    Love the blog, Megs!!

  2. First of all, I am feeling pretty darn good right about now. Thank you, Megan. Thank you so much. I’m thrilled that you’re still writing creatively – that piece was so much fun to read.

And now for my piece of high school advice… Smile and nod A LOT when your teachers talk; it will guarantee they like you.
