Where shall I start?

Dear Avery,

When someone inspires you write…you know you love them! That’s where this idea came from — you, Avery, my niece. You live far away and I watch you grow up through pictures. So what better way to stay connected with you, then writing you letters?

First, when you came into existence you single handedly changed our family. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had great times, fun vacations, incredible weddings and lots of laughs…but somehow, none of that compares to your birth.

So with that, I wanted to start with a running list of experiences, lessons learned, what and who to root for, what to do about friends and boys, and anything funny.

Here is my first list:

1. God is real.

2. Never pass up an opportunity to go to sporting events with Grandpa.

3. Creative writing is good for your soul.

4. Girls are catty.

Ok! Those are your first 4 pieces of gold. Why 4? Because I was born on the 4th…and its one of my favorite numbers.

God. He is real. I’ve seen, felt and experienced unexplainable goodness. People will tell you that you are crazy for believing in something you can’t see — don’t listen to them — they will hopefully find Him soon enough.

Grandpa. Go to the sporting events with your Papa. (You call him Papa now because you are currently 15 months old and you can’t say Grandpa) He will teach you things that most boys don’t know — own that knowledge. Boys will one day like that you know more about sports than most girls. Plus, sports are awesome.

Writing. Writing things down is good for your soul. Write what you feel. Sharing publicly is the one of the most terrifying yet rewarding experiences. I once read a short piece about my fear of dying in a bathroom at a poetry reading. I was encouraged by my creative writing teacher to do it. So I did. And it was like therapy. ^^^ And yes, I have a weird feeling i’m going to die in a bathroom–can’t tell you why. It’s just weird.

Girls. Girls are catty. They just are. And you are a girl…so you will be catty too. We all are. Handle most with caution. Don’t be afraid to befriend any girl — just be cautious about who you surround yourself with. When cattiness is happening…just leave the room. I promise it will be better if you do that.

Until next time my love. I hope you learned something valuable or simply that your Aunt is a little weird.

With Love,

Aunt Megs

  1. I love this, Megan! These letters will be so touching for Avery when she is older. I will be checking back….because they are not only encouraging and inspiring words for a 15month old …but have touched a 32 year old, as well 😉

  2. Love your letter Megan. You are such a good writer. Avery will grow to cherish them as well. Keep them coming.

    Love, Mom
